A bit about yourself

I am a biology graduate from the University of Hull. I came to Working for Health after I developed mental health problems during my PGCE. The service was recommended to me by the job centre as they didn’t have the necessary resources and experience to suit my needs. I have since become a workplace volunteer.

Your volunteer role and responsibilities

As a workplace volunteer, I mainly help with technology related queries. This includes helping people to learn basic computer skills, compose emails and search for jobs. Technology is a very important aspect of modern job searching and not everyone is equipped with the necessary skills.

Why did you want to volunteer at Working for Health?

I wanted to volunteer at Working for Health to rebuild my confidence so that I could comfortably return to work. I wanted to learn how to use my specific skills to my advantage and how to deal with anxiety during job searches and interviews. I knew it was important to acclimatise myself to a professional environment and create and maintain professional relationships again. Working for Health promised to help me achieve this.

How did volunteering at Working for Health benefit you?

Volunteering at Working for Health has provided much needed structure and purpose to my day which has improved my mental wellbeing. It has also exposed me to exciting opportunities and experiences designed with mental health in mind. It has provided me with a friendly, pressure-free working environment and network of support.

Tell us about a moment that stood out for you whilst volunteering

I was part of a video produced by Working for Health that aimed to display how the service had helped people. I was very anxious about the task but found that, due to the relationships I had formed at Working for Health and the time I had spent within the workplace, I was able to explain how and why the service is important. I explained that Working for Health is a valuable service for people dealing with mental health issues. Without volunteering, I doubt that I would have been able to take part in it.

Why would you recommend volunteering at Working for Health?

I would recommend Working for Health because it has invaluable in helping me to build confidence and I feel that it could do the same for others in my position. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and the workplace has a welcoming atmosphere that provides a space away from home for people who feel trapped. I believe that many could benefit from the opportunities on offer at Working for Health, especially given the prevalence of mental health issues today.
