Kelly’s Story

Kellys Nails

"Knowing that people have faith in me and my ability has given me more self-belief."Kelly | East Riding

In the Beginning

After a period of being unwell, and unemployed, I joined Working for Health as they were close by and I knew I needed to build myself back up.

For years I have suffered with low self-esteem and self-confidence, having struggled with anxiety after my illness.

How we helped Kelly

My Keyworker has gone out of their way to help me by listening to what I would like to do as well as the programme, Exploring Opportunities, being able to fund a nail course, after I expressed an interest in becoming a Nail Technician. Working for Health has also helped by creating a practice salon for me to provide manicures to clients to help me complete the number of practical hours needed for my course. As well as allowing me to gain experience, this has enabled me to interact with more people which has boosted my confidence and self-worth. Knowing that people have faith in me and my ability has given me more self-belief.

I have also been attending the Art for all group regularly which I enjoy. I believe it is important to be around people and this group allows me to meet other members which makes me feel less alone in my struggles. The Art Group is professional and, as well as the practical side, it provides in-depth historic information on a particular topic. I have always been creative and like to make jewellery so in June 2024, I had a stall at the Fairy Festival to see if my products would sell but, more importantly, to gain experience and confidence in this area.

The Future

I love coming to Working for Health as I feel comfortable and the staff are all very encouraging. I feel supported, happy and positive for the future.

I would like to continue my learning by completing my Nail Technician course and becoming trained in more beauty treatments such as eyelash tinting, eyebrow shaping and Indian Head Massage. My goal is to eventually work in a beauty salon or other treatment centre once I am fully qualified and confident. I don’t like to plan too far ahead and want to take each day as it comes, taking advantage of any opportunities that may come my way.

Before I started on the Exploring Opportunities programme I felt a bit lost but I now feel like I have a direction and am on the right path.
